Training and Self Study

This book has been prepared to assist in the provision of metallurgical training which is essential in all metal-related businesses. The importance of metallurgical training has also been identified by the 2014 European roadmap for Metallurgy.
This is not a comprehensive documentation of metallurgical theory and practice, but a simple and basic introduction to the salient aspects which are essential to achieve a level of awareness and understanding in metallurgy to assist with the control of the quality of product, solving problems and preventing errors. The approach covers insight into the timeline of key concepts and discoveries that guided the science, the basic methods to control properties and the important effect that microstructure has on the final product’s mechanical properties together with a review of mechanical testing, heat treatment, fracture, welding and corrosion.

  • Throughout history there has always been a common theme within the business environment that it is important to understand that the commercial aspects of business can represent a serious challenge and that there are always several companies competing for the same contract, creating a “win or lose” situation. To succeed as a business, or as a community or as a nation, there is a need to encourage creativity, team spirit and to nurture the difficult to define need for “the ability to generate innovative ideas”. Equally important, companies must also be backed by a competent and motivated workforce. Competency can only be achieved by appropriate training and by allowing time and providing encouragement for self-study and therefore, it is important for a business to create a working environment where competency can develop. There are many examples where poorly engineered or poorly manufactured products have resulted in failure and expensive settlements. It is the responsibility of a company to ensure that their products do not fail. Failures often raise issues of competency of the people involved and necessitates acknowledgement of the often specialist "knowledge" requirements and training needs that have to be met to ensure that the company can deliver quality products and services. Engineering judgement is an important factor in the design and manufacture of reliable parts and products. It requires engineering staff with the ability to acquire and appraise data to enable clear decision making, to access and exploit information technology and to participate in continuing professional development to broaden and enhance their expertise. In the UK it is no longer business as usual. The current political climate has forced Brexit “for better or for worse”. However, we all remember the UK success at the 2016 Olympics which demonstrated the effect generous lottery funding used to finance training can have on success. There is hope that if similar priority can be given to the next generation of engineers and technicians and funding can be provided for technical training, there will be the ability and tenacity in today’s generation of young engineers to gain top ranking in the world and to provide the creativity, team spirit and “innovation” that the country will need.
